Throughout my project I have analyzed the dichotomy of Altria, the tobacco company behind Philip Morris USA, Copenhagen, and NJOY, with its philanthropic activities throughout Virginia and its headquartered home of Richmond. Throughout my research I have found evidence of the damage that smoking has caused, both medical and economical, (American Lung Association 2024) as well as evidence of it’s good deeds through volunteer funds, millions donated to non profits, and various equitable initiatives it strives for in the work place.(Candid 2022)
The main question I asked myself during this research if a good deed is no longer one, if done in order to save one’s reputation. Should Altria’s positive community outreached be overlooked due to the results of their products? Does Altria carry blame for simply creating a product that people want? Even so, does their own good deeds make up for it?
